There was much excitement as we started this week as we knew we were going to see a dramatic change to the front side view of our project. Monday was a little quiet with the guys busy getting everthing tidied up ready for the big digger to arrive. Paul being desperate to get on with the big dig even did a test dig with the Little Digger.
As the day drew to a close we were all a little downhearted that the big digger had not appeared, then, just as the guys were leaving they had the call to say "it was about 30 minutes out". Tim and I had popped in on the way back from our run, (sad to say we do this most days, can't stay away) so we all waited eagerly for it to arrive. And it did, to the great satisfaction of everyone.
These two diagrams below give you an arial view. You can see how we will bring the garden back over the top of the garage and that Tim is building a garage bigger than some houses! emium in Padstow, particularly during the tourist season, so having parking at both sides of our play will be very beneficial. The slope to the front garden has also turned out to be a blessing as it has allowed us to build a very big garage, not block ours or our neighbours views or loose to much of the garden.
By Wednesday Paul was already down to the good stuff, the slate, and he was constantly filling 20 ton trucks all day. The truck were taking it and creating a huge mountain (Paul dug out about 1000 tons) of it at our good friends farm, just up the road. We are so pleased that it will be put good use around their farm.
Below is what it looks like close up. Great stuff. Paul breaks it up as he digs it out. Water drains through it really well and with all the rain we have been getting lately this is really a blessing. Also, it doesn't move so we know anything foundations build on it will be literally "rock solid".

Below show it all pretty much dug out. The photo of me standing at the back gives you some idea of scale. "The Big Dig" has become a bit of a dangerous tourist attraction. As people drive past they are so busy gauping at it they are swerving all over the road! Very funny to watch and luckily no accidents to date.
Tim and I went to a house warming a couple of streets away on Sunday and "The Big Dig" seemed to be the main topic of conversation. In the end we were getting introduced as "the couple with the great big hole in their front garden". The rumours were not helped as Tim thought it was really funny to tell everyone we were building an Infinity Swimming Pool!
This little diagram below gives you a side view of our plot and the final design. It shows you that our plot sits and slopes down between Egerton and Treverbyn Road. Parking is a premium in Padstow, particularly during the tourist season, so having parking at both sides of our play will be very beneficial. The slope to the front garden has also turned out to be a blessing as it has allowed us to build a very big garage, not block ours or our neigbours views or loose to much of the garden.

With a few tweaks here and there, below is a reminder of what we are working towards.
